Southgate CC 3rd XI produced a superb all-round team performance to beat Stoke Newington CC 4th XI by five wickets, successfully chasing 203 after restricting the visitors to 202.
After winning the toss and electing to field, Southgate's fast-bowling pair Arpit Kotecha and Vijay Rao set the tone immediately. The pair took on a huge workload with the new ball, sharing 31 overs between them and keeping the pressure on Stoke Newington through a long opening spell.
Arpit was outstanding, returning excellent figures of 5 for 42 from 13 overs, while Vijay provided relentless support from the other end and finished with 4 for 83 from 18 overs. Between them, the two quicks claimed nine of the ten wickets.
Just as importantly, Southgate maintained control through the middle overs. Yolanda bowled an accurate five-over spell, conceding just 26 runs, while Sarfaraz Hafeji was particularly economical, taking 1 for 20 from 5.3 over. Their disciplined bowling ensured Stoke Newington were never able to completely break free after the opening pressure.
The visitors nevertheless fought hard. *A Shah played an excellent unbeaten 77 from 79 balls, supported by G Brodie's 38 and J Nisse's 37, to take Stoke Newington to 202 all out in 46.3 overs.
Southgate's chase then got off to a difficult start. At 22 for 2 and later 53 for 3, the match was delicately poised.
That was when captain Harshil Vipani joined A Ramdial and produced a true captain's innings.
Harshil struck a positive 39 from 44 balls, including nine boundaries, while Ramdial remained composed at the other end. Together they completely changed the momentum of the chase, putting together a crucial 85-run partnership for the fourth wicket and taking Southgate from 53 for 3 to 138 for 4.
Harshil's innings was exactly what the situation demanded — absorbing the pressure, keeping the scoreboard moving and allowing Ramdial to settle into the match-winning role.
The undisputed star of the day was A Ramdial, who carried his bat with a magnificent 98 not out from 114 balls, including 15 fours. He controlled the chase beautifully, rebuilding when Southgate were under pressure before accelerating as victory came into sight.
After Harshil departed, Santosh contributed a useful 16 from 16 balls, striking two fours and a six, before Jason joined Ramdial to finish the job.
Southgate eventually reached 205 for 5 in 42.4 overs, sealing an excellent five-wicket victory.
Ramdial may have finished agonisingly two runs short of a century, but his unbeaten 98 was the defining innings of a match built on a complete team effort: Arpit and Vijay's sustained fast-bowling attack up front, Yolanda and Sarfaraz's accuracy through the middle overs, Harshil's captain's knock under pressure, and Ramdial's outstanding match-winning innings.
