Tom Smith to replace Sangakkara for MCC

Kumar Sangakkara has been forced to withdraw from MCC’s squad for the Emirates Airline T20 competition in Dubai this Friday due to an ankle injury.

The 38-year-old had been scheduled to play for Ian Bell’s team at The Sevens Stadium, but will now have surgery this week in a bit to be fully fit for the start of the county season, where he will play for Surrey.

Speaking to the tournament’s official website, Sangakkara’s agent Charlie Austin said: “Kumar has injured his ankle and he needs to sort it out before the Surrey season.”

“This is very disappointing for him and for his UAE fans, so he is planning on taking part in next year’s Emirates Airline Twenty20 playing for the MCC in Dubai again.”

Tom Smith of the MCC Young Cricketers will replace Sangakkara in the MCC squad for the competition.

A hard hitting batsman, Smith scored a T20 century in just 29 balls while representing the YCs against Kent in the Second XI T20 competition last summer.

MCC will play tournament holders Yorkshire in the second semi-final of the competition, with the winner going on to meet either Lancashire or the UAE national team in the final.

Bell’s men will then move to Abu Dhabi to take on County Champions Yorkshire in the traditional season opening first-class match at the Sheikh Zayed Stadium.

The four day match will be played using a red ball and begins on Sunday 20 March.
