Winter nets start on 6 Feb

If, like me, you are blessed with enough natural talent to fill a skip then you might not need to know that winter nets are starting in February. But for the vast majority of players it’s a sad fact of life that if you want to get any better at playing cricket then I’m afraid you’re going to have to put in a few thousand hours of practice. So read on…

nets - what larks

Winter nets will be held in Ashmole Academy in Southgate – Ashmole Academy, Cecil Road, Southgate, London N14 5RJ. It used to be called plain old Ashmole School but now seems to have rebranded. Anyway, they will be held every Wednesday evening from 9 to 10pm, starting from 6 February and running through to 27 March. The cost – just £5 per session.

Max Joseph is man in charge of the nets, so to confirm your place on 6 Feb please contact him at m.joseph@moodmedia.com

Club Statistics

Complete averages and career stats are now available on www.southgatecc.com/stats . The fact that we have such comprehensive records available to us is down to the heroic efforts of one man, Mr R.D Gunn. This sterling work has been meticulously put together over recent months with missing scorebooks chased up, calls to opposition captains to fill in the gaps and is supplemented by a full sweep up of match scorecards across all our teams on http://southgate.play-cricket.com/scoreboard/results . A huge thank you to Ricky from everyone who can now enjoy these interesting records.

Chris Blake (probably)

1st XI Overseas player

We have the very great pleasure of announcing Chris Blake of St Kilda Cricket Club in Melbourne as Southgate’s 2013 overseas player. Prior to playing at St Kilda Cricket Club, Chris played six seasons of first grade cricket in the Tasmanian Cricket Association in Hobart as an opening batsman and first-change bowler. In 2004, aged 17, Chris played for Cricket Club Bloemendaal in the Netherlands so Northern hemisphere wickets may not be completely new to him! The club very much looks forward to meeting Chris when he arrives in late April.

Middlesex U21 Development League

Southgate has entered the Middlesex Cricket Board’s new under 21 Development League which is commencing its first year proper after a pilot league last season with eight teams. The matches which will be 80 overs in total and played to mirror Middlesex League rules and points structure will be played on Sunday’s after the exam period. All matches will be played in coloured kit and with a coloured ball and stumps. Teams are permitted to field up to four over 21s however only two may bat in the top six and there are over restrictions. This exciting opportunity is designed to allow up and coming young players to bridge the gap between colts cricket and senior league matches and will complement the Academy training sessions that we’ve offered to our young players in the last two years.

Nets Project

The executive committee has made some early steps towards a development project to create new artificial practice nets on the front ground. To be successful this project will require funding from a number of streams. To facilitate a project of this nature we need a project team to drive the venture forward. For this exciting and much needed project to happen and we need the support of the membership and those who can offer something are strongly encouraged to get in touch with the committee.

Colts Awards

Unfortunately the Colts Awards Dinner didn’t take place this year and the weather severely curtailed the competitive as well as the training aspects of the season. However, the coaches were able to use their judgement to make the following awards:

Under 10: Endeavour award for the most improved player: Tom Stanton

Under 11 Performance award: Devin Dhanki

Under 11 Endeavour award: Tom Parsons

Under 13 Performance award:  Christian McLoughlin

Under 13 Endeavour award: Ishaan Verma

Under 15 Performance award: Niroosh Sugumaran

Under 15 Endeavour award: Tom Ireland

Club cap award: Mustapha Mirza (Under 15)

Niroosh’s bowling was always a threat and although colts match opportunities were limited, his efforts in adult games took him to 21 wickets in the season at an average of 10.33.

Christian McLoughlin was rewarded for his all-round contribution in the Under 13s, captaining, keeping wicket and scoring most runs.

Devin Dhanki captained the Under 11s and showed encouraging capability with both bat and ball.

Colts Sunday indoor nets run from 24 February to 31 March, Ricky Gunn is coordinating.

Mentioned in despatches…

Southgate featured not once but twice in the Wisden Cricketer’s January Edition with a shot from the scorebox on page 21 and a classic snap of former ‘Gater Phil Tufnell asleep in an arm chair outside the groundsman’s shed during a Middlesex County game on page 36 – see above.

SCC CHRISTMAS LUNCH

70 members, friends and family, attended the inaugural SCC Christmas Lunch at the Club on Sunday 3 December.

The day started in the morning with a football match between the Over 30s and the Under 30s, and oldies everywhere will be pleased that the game ended in a 6-0 victory for the Over 30s, especially as the older team included no less than seven players aged over 40 !

The Club’s annual awards ceremony was incorporated into the programme and also the latest draw for the 200 Club was held. The day was completed with music from close harmony quartet, The Tuesday Knights.
